Project brief

Alston Yards is a mixed-use development planned on about 46 acres at N.C. 55 and O'Kelly Chapel Road in west Cary, North Carolina, across from Alston Town Center and near the southern tip of Research Triangle Park. The program approved by the town includes 815 apartments, 400,000 square feet of office space, a 380-room hotel, 55,000 square feet of commercial space and a 25,000-square-foot community gathering space. Heritage Capital Partners is the developer. Gensler designed the office buildings and J Davis Architecture designed the apartments, with ISG also on the architecture team. McAdams is the landscape architect.

The plan is organized around an urban street network with a main street of ground-floor retail beneath other uses. Large gathering areas are meant for events such as farmers markets. Apartments are planned to range from studios to three-bedroom units, and 5% are to be priced as affordable for renters earning 80% of area median income. About seven acres of open space, land for a town park and walking trails are planned to connect to Wake County's greenway system. The site is within walking distance of the Parkside Commons retail center. The Town Council unanimously approved the rezoning in February 2025, and construction of the phased project was expected to begin in 2026.

In 2025, BOGZA produced exterior and interior renderings and an animation for Alston Yards. One view shows the central lawn at sunset, lined with restaurants and shops and framed by the glass office buildings.
