Project brief
Marriott Cancun, An All-Inclusive Resort is a 450-room hotel on Boulevard Kukulcan in the Zona Hotelera of Cancún, Quintana Roo, next to its sister property, the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa. Its rooms and suites are spread over six floors, each with a balcony, and Marriott International operates the resort. The original hotel opened in 1990 as the Marriott Cancun Resort. Rottet Studio, an architecture and interior design firm, designed the renovated lobby.
The lobby design draws on Mayan precedents, 16th-century Spanish architecture and regional textiles and weaving. It uses stone, rope and wood in beige and cream with indigo and turquoise accents, along with terrazzo floors, chandeliers and blackened-metal window frames. The space is organized into zones for reception, reading nooks, a gift shop and a pizza and market outlet called 750°. A bar sits beneath an indigo domed ceiling, and the entry opens onto palm-lined grounds and the Caribbean. The new lobby was reported in June 2021. The resort closed in March 2023 for a roughly $70 million conversion that added an adults-only pool, a children's water park with a lazy river and reworked restaurants. It took its current name with the change and held its grand opening in September 2024 as Marriott's first branded all-inclusive resort.
In 2018, BOGZA produced interior renderings for the lobby renovation, including a view of the white arched lobby with its stone floors, woven chairs and garden views.
