Sage Lodge.

Project brief

Sage Lodge is a 50-room resort on the Yellowstone River in Paradise Valley, in Pray, Montana, about 35 minutes north of Yellowstone National Park. Its rooms are split between a 34-room main lodge and four freestanding Ranch Houses. Each Ranch House has four guest rooms that can be booked separately or together. The buildings total about 85,000 square feet on a 1,200-acre property. Touchstone developed the resort, Jensen Design Architects designed it, and Degen & Degen created the interiors.

The lodge is built of wood, glass and steel. Its lobby rises to a cathedral ceiling, with a wall of windows facing a private casting pond and the mountains. The interiors balance rustic and contemporary elements, with leathered granite, solid wood plank floors, custom steel details and locally sourced art. The program includes a bar and dining room with an exhibition kitchen, a separate steakhouse, more than 6,200 square feet of event space including an event barn, a full-service spa and a fitness center. The site has more than a mile of river frontage and looks toward Emigrant Peak. Sage Lodge opened in July 2018. In 2024 it became the first hotel in Montana to receive a MICHELIN Three Key designation, which it received again in 2025.

In 2017, before the resort opened, BOGZA produced exterior and interior renderings, animation and film for Sage Lodge. The visuals include the timber-trussed event hall set for dinner, the lodge buildings reflected in a pond, and an aerial view across Paradise Valley.
